Our New Report: Untapped Potentials: First Steps of the Ukrainian Biomethane Industry
Europe’s accelerated decarbonisation of the gas sector opens a unique window of opportunity for Ukraine.
With a developed gas transmission system, large storage facilities, and abundant agricultural resources, Ukraine can become a key supplier of sustainable biomethane to the EU.
🔹 Today – only a few operational plants and the first pilot exports to Europe.
🔹 By 2030 – potential to export 0.5–1 bcm of biomethane annually.
🔹 By 2050 – production could reach up to 20 bcm, covering ~20% of the EU’s current biomethane demand.
Why it matters:
• EU energy security: replacing Russian gas with Ukrainian biomethane.
• Economic boost for Ukraine: investments, job creation, and agricultural sector development.
• Environmental benefits: cutting GHG emissions and advancing the circular economy.
Key industry drivers include agricultural companies monetising waste and energy players integrating new technologies. One promising segment is Bio-LNG for transportation, which is already being exported to Germany.
To fully unlock this potential, Ukraine needs to:
• harmonise regulations with the EU (RED II/III, Guarantees of Origin, PoS certification);
• develop connection and storage infrastructure;
• attract investment in production and logistics.
📌 Biomethane is not just green energy — it’s Ukraine’s next strategic export resource.
